For Australian adults who are starting to see the early signs of facial ageing, a new, purified cosmetic injectable is now available to improve the appearance of those wretched frown lines between the eyebrows.
XEOMIN® (incobotulinumtoxinA), pronounced ‘ZEE-oh-min’, is a purified neurotoxin, since it is free from complexing proteins.
According to cosmetic physician and Medical Dean of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr Joseph Hkeik, Sydney, the purified neurotoxin is the active component of XEOMIN®, and these inactive complexing proteins are not required for the neurotoxin to work.
“Purified XEOMIN® contains no complexing proteins. The presence of these inactive components is not necessary,” Dr Hkeik said.
Indicated for the improvement of frown (glabellar) lines between the eyebrows, XEOMIN belongs to a family of medicines called peripheral muscle relaxants.
According to the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery Medical Fellows, the top cosmetic procedures include anti-wrinkle injections, like XEOMIN®.
“Aesthetic procedures are becoming increasingly popular in Australia as a way to achieve and maintain a socially desirable appearance,” said Dr Hkeik
Frown lines, caused by the glabellar muscles contracting, start developing in the 30s and become more severe over time. However, there are two distinct types of ageing which affect the development of frown lines.
Intrinsic ageing, caused by the genes we inherit is a continuous process that normally begins in our mid-20s, but typically not visible for decades. Extrinsic ageing, however is influenced by external factors. Many Australians follow a healthy diet and lead active, outdoor and social lifestyles, which can contribute to a naturally youthful appearance. However factors including sun exposure can lead to premature skin ageing, resulting in weakened skin structure and the development of frown lines.
“Deep wrinkles and skin folds can create an angry, upset or sad appearance and these negative expressions can lead to disadvantages and discrimination both socially and in the workplace,” Dr Hkeik said.
XEOMIN® is the third botulinum toxin to be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as an aesthetic medicine for the treatment of the glabellar frown lines.
